Binance $6.3 Billion Hack Becomes Biggest Crypto Theft

Binance suffers a record $6.3 billion crypto hack, freezes $3 billion in assets and promises to cover customer losses as investigations continue

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has suffered a massive security breach involving approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets. The October 29 attack could become the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, raising fresh concerns about digital asset security.

Binance confirmed that around $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen. However, the status of the remaining $3.3 billion remains unclear as investigators track suspicious transactions.

How Did the Binance Hack Happen?

Preliminary investigations suggest attackers may have compromised a laptop belonging to a Binance DevOps engineer. The breach potentially allowed unauthorised access to internal systems and enabled fraudulent cryptocurrency withdrawals.

Binance said investigators had found no evidence that private wallet keys were exposed. The company is working with law enforcement agencies and blockchain security firms to identify those responsible.

Binance Freezes Billions in Crypto Assets

Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while conducting security checks. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle helped freeze affected assets, blocking transfers linked to suspicious cryptocurrency wallets.

Binance co-founder Yi He assured customers that their funds remained safe. The exchange pledged to cover hacking losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate reserves.

North Korean Hackers Suspected

Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not independently confirmed the perpetrators. The breach surpasses the $1.5 billion Bybit cryptocurrency theft recorded in February 2025.

Impact to Expect

The incident could intensify scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges and their cybersecurity safeguards. Investors may also face increased market volatility as Binance works to restore confidence and determine the final financial losses.
