Dubai launches a four-week trial of driverless electric pods at Bluewaters Island, testing AI-powered transport that could improve Metro connectivity

DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a four-week trial of the Glydways automated transit system at Bluewaters Island. The initiative introduces driverless electric pods designed to improve connectivity, reduce reliance on private vehicles and support Dubai’s smart mobility ambitions.

The trial began on October 11, 2026, in partnership with Glydways and Dubai Holding. RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer inaugurated the project with a five-minute journey aboard one of the autonomous vehicles.

How Do Dubai’s Driverless Pods Work?

The electric pods accommodate four to six passengers and travel at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Each vehicle can cover approximately 250 kilometres on a single battery charge.

The system uses artificial intelligence, 20 LiDAR sensors, radar and high-definition cameras to navigate dedicated guideways without drivers. Passengers will eventually be able to request direct journeys and personalise onboard temperature and entertainment settings.

Trial to Test Safety and Performance

During the four-week trial, RTA will assess passenger safety, vehicle reliability, journey times and overall operational performance. The system operates independently of regular road traffic, allowing pods to travel without conventional congestion.

According to RTA, a fully developed network could transport more than 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions.

Future Routes Under Consideration

RTA is studying a proposed 2.8-kilometre route connecting National Paints Metro Station with Bluewaters Island. Other potential locations include Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City. However, wider deployment will depend on trial results and further evaluations.

Impact to Expect

The technology could provide faster connections between Metro stations, residential communities and major attractions. If successful, the Glydways system could help Dubai expand sustainable transport options while reducing congestion and improving daily commuting experiences.
