Abdul El-Sayed makes US history by winning Michigan’s Senate race, with his Indian-origin wife Sarah Jukaku and her family celebrating the milestone
DETROIT, US: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has made history by becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate after defeating Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely contested midterm election on November 3, 2026.
The 42-year-old former public health official celebrated his victory alongside his Indian-origin wife, Dr Sarah Jukaku, in an emotional moment before cheering supporters in Detroit on November 4.
Emotional Victory Speech Highlights Family Support
Addressing his wife during the victory celebrations, El-Sayed said, “Thank you for everything. There is no doing this without you, and I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else.” He also acknowledged his daughters and extended family for their support throughout his political journey.
Indian Connection to Historic US Senate Victory
Although El-Sayed is of Egyptian ancestry, his victory has special significance for an Indian-origin family with roots in Bhatkal, Karnataka. His wife, Sarah Jukaku, is a US-born psychiatrist whose family traces its origins to India’s coastal Karnataka region. The couple met while studying at the University of Michigan.
Sarah’s father, Tayeb, who migrated from India to the United States, praised Michigan voters for looking beyond religious differences. He described the outcome as a victory for sincerity, authenticity and shared values, expressing hope that Americans would increasingly judge candidates on their character rather than religious identity.
Victory Amid Religious and Political Attacks
El-Sayed’s campaign faced criticism over his Muslim identity and positions on US foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel and the Middle East. Despite these controversies, he secured Michigan’s Senate seat on a platform addressing living costs, healthcare affordability and corporate influence in politics. His election marks a historic milestone for Muslim representation in American politics, with El-Sayed expected to take office in January 2027.
