Democrats have won control of the US House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, according to NBC News projections, giving them greater power to challenge President Donald Trump’s policies
WASHINGTON: Democrats have secured a projected majority in the US House of Representatives following the November 3 midterm elections, ending Republican control of the chamber and reshaping the political landscape during President Donald Trump’s second term.
NBC News projects that Democrats will win approximately 244 seats, comfortably exceeding the 218 required for a majority. The final number remains subject to ongoing vote counting. Reuters has also reported Democratic gains in Congress.
Democrats regain control of the House
All 435 House seats were contested in the elections. Republicans entered the vote with a narrow majority, while Democrats needed a net gain of three seats to regain control.
Voters weighed economic concerns, inflation, immigration policies, tariffs and the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict. The results mark a significant shift in Washington, where Republicans had controlled the House since January 2023.
What changes for Trump?
Democrats will assume control of the House when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027.
Their majority will allow them to lead congressional committees, launch investigations and scrutinise administration policies. However, passing legislation will still require cooperation across both chambers of Congress.
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become House Speaker, potentially making history as the first Black American to hold the position.
What happens next?
The Democratic victory adds a new dimension to Trump’s remaining presidency, particularly over federal spending, healthcare, immigration and foreign policy.
Although control of the House has been projected, individual races remain under counting and final seat totals could change.
The new congressional balance could lead to increased negotiations and legislative disputes between the White House and Congress over the next two years.
Impact to Expect
Democratic control of the US House could limit President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, increase scrutiny of his administration and intensify negotiations over spending, immigration and trade. The shift may also influence US foreign policy, including relations with the UAE and the wider Middle East, while setting the stage for political battles ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
