How Vidyut Jammwal Landed Dhalsim in Street Fighter

Street Fighter director Kitao Sakurai reveals how Vidyut Jammwal’s martial arts expertise and authentic connection to Indian traditions helped him secure Dhalsim’s role.

Mumbai, India: Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal is set to make his Hollywood debut as Dhalsim in the upcoming Street Fighter film. HHowever, director Kitao Sakurai revealed that the production team nearly dropped the iconic character from the movie.

In an interview with Hindustan Times published on October 10, Sakurai explained why the team considered removing Dhalsim. Some production members worried that the character’s portrayal could reinforce outdated stereotypes about Indian culture.

Why Vidyut Jammwal was chosen

Sakurai wanted to keep Dhalsim in the film while portraying authentic Indian traditions.

After considering several actors, Sakurai connected with Jammwal through a Zoom call. The two reportedly developed an immediate connection during their first conversation.

The director praised Jammwal’s knowledge of yoga, Sanskrit and martial arts. He explained that the actor’s personal experiences closely aligned with Dhalsim’s spiritual and physical identity.

Jammwal’s exceptional body control and impressive fight sequences particularly fascinated Sakurai. The director described the actor’s movements as almost supernatural.

From Indian martial arts to Hollywood

Jammwal, known for films such as Commando, has practised Kalaripayattu since childhood.

The actor recently revealed that he had never played the Street Fighter video game before landing the role. However, he began exploring the game extensively after joining the film.

Jammwal believes Dhalsim’s discipline, spirituality and combat skills closely reflect his own personality.

Street Fighter release date

The upcoming Street Fighter film brings together a star-studded cast, including Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes.

The filmmakers plan to release Street Fighter in theatres on October 16, 2026. Indian audiences can watch the film in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Impact to expect

Jammwal’s Hollywood debut could introduce Indian martial arts to wider international audiences while strengthening his recognition in global action cinema.
