UAE driving licences will have validity periods ranging from one to ten years under regulations effective January 1, 2027, depending on age, nationality and residency status
ABU DHABI: The UAE has clarified driving licence validity periods for citizens and expatriate residents under new federal traffic regulations taking effect on January 1, 2027.
Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 outlines the duration of driving licences based on motorists’ age, nationality and residency status. The regulations form part of the updated framework implementing Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024. The validity periods largely reflect existing licensing practices, but the new regulations formally establish them within the updated federal framework.
One-Year Driving Licences for Motorists Under 21
Under Article 55, motorists younger than 21 will receive temporary driving licences valid for one year. Authorities may renew these licences for another year until drivers become eligible for longer validity periods. First-time applicants aged 21 or older will receive driving licences valid for two years, regardless of nationality.
Five-Year and Ten-Year Driving Licence Validity
Following the initial licensing period, motorists aged 21 and above qualify for different renewal durations.
| Driver category | Licence validity |
|---|---|
| Motorists under 21 | 1 year |
| First-time applicants aged 21+ | 2 years |
| UAE citizens aged 21+ (renewal) | 10 years |
| GCC citizens aged 21+ (renewal) | 10 years |
| Expatriate residents aged 21+ (renewal) | 5 years |
These periods are confirmed by the UAE Government and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.
How to Renew a UAE Driving Licence
Motorists can renew driving licences through authorised government platforms, including the Ministry of Interior and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority. Drivers generally need a valid eyesight test and must settle outstanding traffic fines before completing the renewal process.
The regulations also strengthen licensing requirements and introduce additional road safety measures. Motorists should check their licence expiry dates and follow the renewal procedures applicable in their emirate.
Impact to Expect
The UAE’s updated driving licence rules will provide greater clarity on validity periods for citizens, expatriates and young motorists. Drivers can plan renewals more efficiently and avoid penalties for expired licences.
