Tesla has unveiled its flying car prototype, featuring SpaceX thrusters, spectacular aerial stunts and acceleration claims below one second. Production is targeted for 2028.
TEXAS: Tesla has unveiled its much-anticipated Tesla flying car prototype, demonstrating how SpaceX-inspired propulsion technology could transform high-performance electric vehicles.
The American electric vehicle manufacturer presented its redesigned Roadster at a SpaceX testing facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, 2026.
The demonstration featured the electric sports car briefly lifting into the air, performing an aerial rotation and landing using powerful thrusters.
Tesla chief executive Elon Musk announced plans to begin production in 2028, following years of delays since the vehicle was first introduced in 2017.
What makes Tesla’s new Roadster different?
The next-generation Roadster combines an electric powertrain with advanced propulsion technology developed alongside SpaceX.
Unlike conventional sports cars, the prototype uses high-pressure air thrusters to generate additional force, enabling movements that ordinary tyres and motors cannot achieve.
During the unveiling, the vehicle travelled upside down along a specially designed ramp before completing an airborne manoeuvre.
It also demonstrated the ability to jump over several Tesla vehicles during the presentation.
However, the technology shown does not establish that the Roadster can perform sustained flight like an aircraft.
How fast is Tesla’s flying car?
Tesla claims its new Roadster can accelerate from zero to 60 mph, approximately 97 km/h, in just 0.81 seconds.
Musk also suggested the vehicle could achieve speeds exceeding 230 mph, equivalent to approximately 370 km/h.
If independently verified, these figures would place the Roadster among the quickest accelerating production-intended cars.
The demonstration highlighted Tesla’s ambition to push electric vehicle performance beyond traditional limits.
However, final production specifications and independently verified performance results remain unavailable.
When will the new Tesla Roadster launch?
Tesla is targeting 2028 for production of the redesigned Roadster.
The company originally revealed its second-generation Roadster in 2017, but repeated delays prevented the model from reaching customers.
The latest unveiling represents a major development, although Tesla has not confirmed when deliveries will begin.
Pricing and complete battery specifications also remain unclear.
Another important challenge involves regulations. Musk acknowledged that certain versions may not be permitted on public roads.
Reports indicate that Tesla is planning different configurations, including a specialised Rocket version with aerial capabilities.
Impact to expect
Tesla’s flying car technology could boost investment in electric vehicles and futuristic transport across the UAE and Middle East. However, safety regulations, production challenges and commercial availability will determine its future success.
