UAE Gem No. 2 Oil Leak Stopped, Beach Closures Continue

by Team DTN

Authorities say no fresh oil is leaking from the tanker and pollution levels have fallen markedly. The remaining slick is concentrated off Umm Al Quwain and extends towards parts of Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Sharjah; clean-up and precautionary beach closures continue, while fish and drinking water remain safe

The UAE has confirmed that the oil leak from the Gem No. 2 tanker has stopped, with no fresh leakage detected. Authorities reported a significant decline in marine pollution while clean-up operations continue across affected coastal areas.

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is coordinating with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) to secure the tanker and protect maritime navigation.

Oil Slick Remains Near Four Emirates

Satellite images from October 30 show that the remaining oil slick is concentrated off Umm Al Quwain. Some pollution extends towards coastal areas in Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Sharjah.

Environmental teams continue surveying affected waters and removing oil through mechanical recovery methods. They are also using approved chemical dispersants under international safety guidelines.

Specialist teams are repairing damaged sections of the tanker and assessing its structural condition to determine the safest next steps.

Beach Closures Continue as Food and Water Remain Safe

Authorities have maintained precautionary closures at several beaches and coastal locations. However, officials clarified that these restrictions do not necessarily indicate pollution at every closed site.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed that fish and food products available in UAE markets remain safe for consumption.

Etihad Water and Electricity is monitoring seawater intake points and testing drinking water to ensure continued compliance with safety standards. The company confirmed that precautionary measures will not disrupt water supplies.

Impact to Expect

Residents can expect continued coastal monitoring, targeted clean-up operations and temporary beach restrictions until authorities consider affected areas safe.

Marine and aerial surveillance will continue alongside satellite monitoring. Officials have urged residents and visitors to follow official beach access advisories as environmental recovery progresses.
