The UAE has launched emergency relief efforts in Panama following a powerful earthquake. The operation will provide essential supplies and shelter to affected families under President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s directives
ABU DHABI: The UAE has launched an urgent humanitarian relief operation to support earthquake-affected communities in Panama. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed the UAE Aid Agency to provide emergency assistance following widespread damage and evacuations.
The initiative, announced on October 24, aims to deliver essential supplies and shelter materials to families affected by the disaster. The UAE will coordinate with Panamanian authorities and international humanitarian organisations to ensure assistance reaches those most in need.
Powerful Earthquake Hits Panama
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Panama on October 9, damaging homes, schools, roads and public infrastructure. The country declared a state of emergency after two major earthquakes and numerous aftershocks.
Authorities reported 27 injuries and damage to approximately 420 homes. Several schools, hotels, churches and bridges also suffered damage. The hardest-hit provinces included Veraguas, Herrera, Coclé and Los Santos.
UAE Aid Agency Coordinates Relief Efforts
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, said the country remains committed to responding quickly to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
He explained that the agency is working closely with the UAE Embassy in Panama, local authorities and international organisations. Teams will prioritise vulnerable families and communities facing the greatest hardship.
The relief operation will follow humanitarian assessments issued by relevant United Nations organisations. These assessments will help identify immediate needs and guide assistance to affected areas.
UAE Strengthens International Humanitarian Support
The initiative reflects the UAE’s continued support for countries affected by earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.
The UAE previously expressed solidarity with Panama on October 10, reaffirming its support for communities recovering from the earthquake.
Impact to Expect
The emergency response will help affected families access essential supplies and temporary shelter. Coordinated relief efforts aim to ease immediate hardship, support recovery and restore stability in damaged communities.
