Avatar: The Last Airbender universe expands with new prequel series ‘Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos’ with the series set to stream on Paramount+
Los Angeles, USA: The beloved animated universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender is expanding once again, with a new prequel series exploring the adventures of an unconventional young Avatar.
Titled Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, the upcoming series was announced at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026, by franchise co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
A rebellious Avatar takes centre stage
The prequel follows Kuruk, a teenage Water Tribe Avatar who rejects traditional training methods and instead travels the world to master the four elements.
Accompanied by his animal companion Nikik, a koalaotter, Kuruk encounters pirates, unpredictable spirits and an increasingly frustrated teacher.
Unlike previous Avatars, Kuruk approaches his responsibilities with an adventurous personality, offering audiences a different perspective on the franchise’s mythology.
The series takes place before the events of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Original creators return
The new animated series will be produced by Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios, with Bryan Konietzko serving as showrunner.
Paramount+ will stream the series, although an official premiere date has not been announced.
Fans attending New York Comic Con received an exclusive first look at Kuruk and Nikik.
Avatar franchise continues growing
The announcement comes alongside the expansion of Avatar: Seven Havens, which premiered on Paramount+ on October 9.
The sequel series follows Pavi, a young Earthbender navigating a world that views the Avatar as a threat.
Paramount+ has also renewed Seven Havens for Books 3 and 4, strengthening its growing animated franchise.
Impact to expect
The prequel could attract longtime Avatar fans, introduce younger audiences to previously unexplored characters and expand Paramount+’s animation catalogue.
