South African jurist Navi Pillay, of Indian Tamil origin, wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing human rights, international law and justice.

Oslo, Norway: Indian-origin South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong contributions to peace, human rights and international justice.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision on Friday, recognising the 85-year-old former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for strengthening international legal institutions and advancing accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

From Apartheid-Era South Africa to Global Recognition

Born in Durban in 1941 to a family of Indian Tamil descent, Pillay grew up under South Africa’s apartheid regime. She established her own law practice in 1967 and defended anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela.

Her legal career later took her to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she helped establish important legal precedents recognising sexual violence as a potential act of genocide.

Pillay subsequently served as a judge at the International Criminal Court before becoming UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

Nobel Committee Recognises Commitment to Justice

The Nobel Committee highlighted Pillay’s role in protecting international legal principles during a period of growing geopolitical tensions and challenges to global judicial institutions.

Pillay also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory between 2021 and 2025. Its findings on Gaza drew international attention and were strongly rejected by Israel.

She has additionally served as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in proceedings concerning alleged genocide against Myanmar’s Rohingya population.

Impact to Expect

Pillay’s recognition is expected to renew international discussions about judicial accountability, human rights protection and the importance of strengthening global legal institutions.

The Nobel Peace Prize carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor, with the ceremony scheduled for December 10 in Oslo.
